Shark Monster

Introduction

The shark monster is an important deity in Olmec mythology who is extremely identifiable with its distinct physical characteristics. The role of the shark monster might still not be clearly understood but the importance in the pantheon is not lost upon researchers. Although the depiction of the shark monster is not new, it is significant that various scholars have recognized its piscine characteristics. Due to the discussion that preceded this, it is now possible to identify the animal with greater confidence. In addition, it is also possible to distinguish its chronological and geographical variants.

Physical Traits

The main character of the Olmec creation story is the shark monster, which is easily identifiable with a dorsal fin and tail. It typically has a crescent-shaped eye and a small lower jaw. When fully formed, this anthropomorphic fish monster exhibits a dorsal fin, a split tail, and crossed bands.

Family

Many researchers believe that the Shark Monster is the Olmec version of the Cipactli because of it being the only water based character in Olmec mythology. Also there are claims that the body of the Shark Monster was used to create the earth in the Olmec creation story.

Other names

The Shark Monster is also known as the Fish Monster and also as God VI.

Powers and Abilities

The presence of shark teeth in excavations indicates that the Shark Monster was part of the Olmec rituals. It is believed that the Shark Monster was the patron god of the small section of the Olmec population who were fishermen.

Modern Day Influence

Although the depiction of the Fish Monster has been featured in various forms of art, such as stone carvings and pottery, the most prominent example is the San Lorenzo Monument 58. This massive stone carving shows the creature with a large fork and a fearsome mouth.
