Brihaspati

Introduction

Brihaspati is a central figure in Indian mythology, symbolizing wisdom, guidance, and knowledge. Known also as Bṛhaspati, he is both a revered deity and a significant sage within Hindu tradition. As the “Guru of the Gods,” Brihaspati serves as the spiritual teacher and advisor to the Devas, embodying virtues of learning, piety, and righteous conduct. His influence is prominent across various Hindu scriptures, including the Vedas, Puranas, and the Mahabharata. In Hindu astrology, Brihaspati is linked with Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, which is regarded as auspicious.

Physical Traits

Brihaspati is generally portrayed as a luminous figure with a fair or golden complexion, symbolizing enlightenment and cosmic knowledge. Though detailed physical descriptions are limited, he is often depicted with a serene and wise demeanor. His appearance typically includes saffron robes and sacred symbols, reflecting his divine nature. Brihaspati may also be shown with a white beard and mustache, signifying age and wisdom. In some artistic representations, he is depicted riding a horse or chariot, underscoring his esteemed status among celestial beings.

Family

Brihaspati’s lineage is described differently across various texts. In the Rig Veda, he is identified as the son of the sage Angiras, who is highly esteemed for his hymns and wisdom. The Shiva Purana, however, adds that Brihaspati’s mother is Surupa. Brihaspati’s wife is Tara, the celestial embodiment of stars, symbolizing the union of wisdom and illumination. Together, they have several children, including Bhanumati, Raka, Archishmati, Mahamati, Mahishmati, Sinivali, and Habishmati. With another consort, Subha, Brihaspati fathered Keshari, Kushadhvaja, Kacha, and four other sons. Additionally, he has a son named Romashaa from Tara and a daughter named Revati from Mammata.

Other names

Brihaspati is known by several names that reflect his various roles and attributes within Hindu mythology. As Guru, he is recognized as the teacher and guide of the Devas, embodying wisdom and enlightenment. In Hindu astrology, he is equated with Jupiter, the largest planet, symbolizing prosperity and insight. The name Devaguru, meaning “Teacher of the Gods,” underscores his pivotal role in imparting knowledge to celestial beings. Additionally, the name Brihaspati itself combines “Brihas” (immense) and “Pati” (lord or master), highlighting his supreme status as a teacher.

Other epithets such as Bramanaspati signify his role as the preceptor of the gods, while Purohita reflects his mastery over sacred wisdom, charms, hymns, and rites. The name Angirasa denotes his lineage as the son of the sage Angiras, and Vyasa links him with the sage Vyasa. In some traditions, Brihaspati is even identified with Agni, the god of fire, demonstrating his multifaceted nature and broad influence across various aspects of mythology and astrology.

Powers and Abilities

Brihaspati is esteemed by the Devas for his profound knowledge and guidance. As the Guru (teacher) of the gods, he plays a crucial role in maintaining cosmic order. His special bow, with a string made of Rta, symbolizes his commitment to upholding dharma. Brihaspati is also known for his role as a counselor, offering strategic advice during divine conflicts and challenges. His association with fire signifies enlightenment, wisdom, and transformative power.

Brihaspati’s attributes extend beyond his role as a divine mentor. His wisdom encompasses various aspects of life, including ethics, morality, and spiritual practices, providing valuable guidance to both gods and humans. In Hindu astrology, he is associated with Jupiter, a benefic planet that is believed to bring prosperity and success. Brihaspati’s powers include strategic counsel, where his sharp intellect aids in devising battle strategies, eloquence in oratory, and serving as the chief priest of the Devas, performing rituals to maintain cosmic order. His influence in astrology and his protective nature further highlight his significance in promoting spiritual growth and shielding his devotees from negative forces.

Modern Day Influence

Brihaspati’s influence transcends ancient mythology, impacting various aspects of contemporary life. In India, Thursday, or “Guruvar,” is regarded as an auspicious day for new educational pursuits, with many institutions starting their academic sessions on this day. In Vedic astrology, Jupiter, representing Brihaspati, is seen as a beneficial planet associated with good fortune, growth, and wisdom. Rituals and gemstones linked to Jupiter are often used to invoke his blessings for success and prosperity.

Brihaspati’s legacy continues in modern practices and cultural contexts. In Hindu astrology and Vastu Shastra, his association with Jupiter is crucial for understanding an individual’s fortune and ensuring harmonious living environments. His role as a model teacher influences educational and professional guidance, with many seeking his blessings for success and ethical conduct. Additionally, Brihaspati is honored in Hindu festivals and rituals, and his depiction as a wise sage persists in popular culture, reflecting his enduring significance as a symbol of wisdom and guidance.
