Gods were a very important part of the whole Aztec civilization as every major element of their existence revolved around ensuring that the gods were appeased so as to ensure favourable results. The gods were particularly fond of human sacrifice and the people regularly offer slaves captured from wars and conquests as offerings to the gods.

There are many major and minor gods within the Aztec pantheon. Many of the major gods have elaborate structures built for their worship which have stood the test of time and are helping archaeologists, historians and anthropologists understand more about their way of life.
