Aboriginal gods have been preserved in mythology and religion via a sacred tradition that is performed in the stories of Aboriginal Australians. Aboriginal spirituality includes the Dreamtime (the Dreaming), songlines, and Aboriginal oral literature. An Aboriginal spiritual guide often presents a portrait of the group’s home country, describing its culture and traditions. Most of these spiritualities belong to specific groups, but some span the whole continent in one form or another.

The Dreamtime refers to the time when the creator ancestors of Aboriginal Australians travelled across the land and named their descendants as they went. This belief system is based on reverence for the land and the current-day reality of dreaming. There are many different languages and cultural groups within Australia’s indigenous communities. The various groups have their own distinct belief structures and traditions. The knowledge contained in the Dreaming can be passed down through various means, including songlines, dances, and ceremonies.
