Tibetan animals are an important part of the Tibetan mythology and many characters occupy places of extreme respect even today. With heavy influence of Chinese, Indian and Buddhist mythology, it is a surprise that they are able to maintain their own distinct personality with their characters and stories.

The animals tend to be associated with natural wildlife that is indigenous to the region and which also form a part of the day to day life of the Tibetan people. With the occupation of China, the local traditions and beliefs have started taking a backseat and it is rumoured that a deliberate systematic destruction of the mythology is in progress.
