Chinese animals in mythology tend to range from the absolute fantastical like multi headed dragons to very simple ones that do not inspire much in terms of imagination. Many animals from Chinese mythology also transcend to other Asian Mythologies like Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Tibetan.

These animals have stood the test of time and are still a a very important part of their culture, traditions, celebrations and worship in various parts of China. This is especially true in rural China where the ancient, indigenous religions are still widely practiced. Many of these animals have made it to modern symbolism and are often referred to as signs of a glorious past and heritage.
